Beatles Classics Make the Show on ‘Idol’
By Anne Neville
Show’s theme: A week after the Lennon-McCartney songbook, songs this week came from the Beatles.
Best performance of the night: David Cook’s rock-star take on “Day Tripper.” David Archuleta was also good on a sweet and heartfelt “Long and Winding Road.”
Worst performance of the night: Without a doubt, Chikezie’s harmonica interlude between the slow part of “I’ve Just Seen a Face” and his fast-paced rockabilly ending. But Michael Johns’ sliced-and- diced 90-second version of the epic “A Day in the Life” was whiplash- inducing with its mood switches.
Most surprising event: Paula Abdul insightfully says that Jason Castro’s sing-songy take on “Michelle” was sung like a polka, and she was exactly, precisely right. How often has that happened? Never.
Best quip: Simon Cowell to Kristy Lee Cook after an underwhelming performance: “I think you need something like hypnosis or something, because the problem is that you are not a good performer … it’s like musical wallpaper, insomuch as you notice it, but you can’t remember it.”
Most disturbing moment: After stinking up “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” Kristy Lee Cook pointed at Simon Cowell and said, “I can blow you out of your socks, and you know it!” OK, but how about bringing some of that energy to the stage?
Who should go: Kristy Lee Cook, but Michael Johns is in danger, too.
