U.S. filmmaker Peter Berg reportedly has signed on to direct a movie based on Frank Herbert’s book Dune, a futuristic tale set on the desert planet Arrakis.

The 1965 novel was previously adapted as a 1984 film by David Lynch and as a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries.

Variety.com said the Paramount Pictures project is looking for writers who will deliver a faithful adaptation of the classic, award-winning book.

Kevin Misher, who obtained the book rights from the Herbert estate, will produce the film, the trade paper said.

Berg’s film credits include the upcoming Will Smith vehicle Hancock, as well as The Kingdom and Friday Night Lights.
