MECA Postpones Opening Performance of Papi, Me, and Cesar Chavez

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 March 2008, 18:00 CDT

Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA) has postponed its opening performance of Papi, Me, and Cesar Chavez until further notice.

The play, originally scheduled for Friday, March 28th, is a fictional story of a young girl and her family and their connection in the fight for social justice during the United Farm Workers Union strike.

The play is an original composition created for MECA in 2003 by Anthony J. Garcia of El Centro Su Teatro and made possible in part by a grant from the National Performance Networks' Community Fund. It serves as a positive portrayal of the Hispanic cultural contribution and it is a catalyst for intergenerational cultural discussion.

The play was written by Anthony J. Garcia, Executive Artistic Director at El Centro Su Teatro in Denver, which is a multi-disciplinary cultural arts center and one of the oldest Chicano theaters in the country. It will be directed by Robert Singleton, educator, consultant, and former Theater Department Chair at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.

The play celebrates Chavez's championing for the rights of the United Farm Workers Union during the 1960s. It articulates some of the issues that started the Chicano movement and how a grassroots organization successfully challenged corporate power in one of the most important democratic actions to date.

For additional information on the play and updates on a new date for the performance, visit www.meca-houston.org or contact Armando Silva at armando.silva@meca-houston.org.
