Discovery Network Launches 'Green' Cable Channel

Posted on: Thursday, 10 April 2008, 06:00 CDT

The first cable channel dedicated to 24-hour coverage of eco-friendly, green issues is set to launch in early June.

Planet Green will replace Discovery Home on the Discovery Network roster with a selection of brand new programming featuring some famous faces.

Among the new shows: "Emeril Green," an exploration of organic foods with New Orleans chef Emeril Legasse, and "Battleground Earth," featuring Ludacris and Motley Crue's Tommy Lee battling it out in a series of green-themed challenges.

The channel will join a number of other cable programs geared toward living healthy eco-lifestyles.

That includes shows like "Dumped," which recently ended its run on BBC America. "Survivor" on a trash heap, the series followed 11 strangers as they attempted to build a society in one of Great Britain's largest dump sites. Participants faced off in challenges that raised awareness about how much waste we produce and provided possible solutions to the problem.

Here are a couple of other green programs on cable now: 'Human Footprint'

6 p.m. Sunday on the National Geographic Channel.

The average person will go through 3,796 diapers as a baby. He will drink a total of 13,056 pints of milk, clean more than 500 pounds of laundry a year and run through about seven washing machines during his time on Earth.

These numbers and more will come to light with this new National Geographic documentary.

Reporter Elizabeth Vargas explores what kind of "footprint" the average person leaves on this planet with a series of visually interesting examples and revealing statistics.

Have you seen what 12,888 oranges, the total number eaten on average during one's life, look like all at once? You will Sunday. 'Big Ideas for a Small Planet'

Next new episode: 9 p.m. Tuesday on the Sundance Channel.

"Big Ideas" is a Sundance series that kicked off in 2007, with episodes that focus on general topics such as "Fuel" and "Food" and investigate how innovative minds are finding new ways to help the Earth.

The program is a staple of "The Green," Sundance's Tuesday night eco-lineup.

Other shows on "The Green" include documentaries and episodes of "The Sierra Club Chronicles."
