BARRIE, Ont. - A national media organization is firing back at the mayor of Merritt, B.C., following his suggestion that out-of-town media should leave the Interior ranching community.
Mayor David Laird has lashed out at reporters, saying the murders of three young children on Sunday are "no longer a national event."
But Bob McLaughlin, president of the Radio-Television News Directors' Association of Canada, says Laird's comments are troubling and short sighted.
He says the news media needs access to cover an important story and reporters are not in Merritt to judge the town's image.
McLaughlin, manager of a Toronto-area television station, says the tragic murders are a story that must be told, regardless of Laird's feelings.
Police are conducting a manhunt for Allan Schoenborn, the children's father, who is the prime suspect in the case.
