Canadian Forces Ads Downplay Combat

Newly released TV recruiting ads for the Canadian Forces tone down earlier ones featuring combat, and stress more rescue and relief missions.
The newest ads shown to reporters in Ottawa Tuesday more resemble a music-video with blinking images and slower, moodier music, the Canwest News Service reported. The words Fight Distress, Fight Fear and Fight Chaos float across the screen as members of the armed forces are shown in the Arctic rescuing people in a downed plane.
Previous Canadian Forces ads were more high-tech and resembled video games with heavily armed soldiers in action, the report said. They were criticized as appealing to children.
Col. Matthew Overton, chief of recruiting in the province of Ontario, denied the shift was to downplay the mounting death toll of Canadian troops in the NATO mission in Afghanistan, where at least 82 soldiers have been killed.
What we wanted to do with this ad was make sure there was a better breadth of expression for Canadians as to what the Canadian Forces are doing for them, Overton said.
