Spy Drama Makes for a Touching Production
An exciting new adaptation of Michael Frayn’s recent award- winning novel Spies is at the Exeter Northcott next week; a co- production between Exeter company Theatre Alibi and Oxford Playhouse.
Spies, set during the Second World War, is a terrific story with a gripping mystery at its heart which keeps you guessing right to the end. It was named the Whitbread Novel of the Year.
The action takes place in a suburban close where two boys play at detectives. As they watch their neighbours, hoping to uncover a German spy, they find themselves face to face with the one thing they had never suspected. It’s a tale of childhood innocence colliding with adult secrets, a cross between The Go-Between, Just William and Whistle Down the Wind.
Spies is performed by an ensemble of six. Derek Frood, who plays Stefan, the older man whose story it is, and Jordan Whyte, as Mrs Hayward, have been core members of Theatre Alibi for years. Christian Flint (Mr Hayward), Benjamin Warren (Stephen) and Cerianne Roberts (Barbara Berrill) have worked with the company on previous productions. New to the team is RADA graduate Jean-Paul McLeod.
Theatre Alibi have turned Spies into a rich, funny and touching piece of theatre with compelling performances and a thrilling score played live on cello and accordion.
Spies is at the Exeter Northcott from April 22-26. Box office: 01392 493493
