World Films, Inc., a California-based production company that's re-defining the action-drama genre, announced today the signing of a major international distribution deal with Boll AG for their latest thriller, The Butcher. Boll AG beat-out six top distributors to win the rights, testament to the film's exceptional production quality and mass cross-cultural box-office appeal.
Headquartered in Germany, Boll AG is led by legendary German filmmaker, Dr. Uwe Boll, who discovered The Butcher himself while attending the film's world premiere at the Cinema City International Film Festival (CCIF) in Los Angeles, September 2007. The Butcher was nominated for the prestigious CCIF "Best Picture" award, kicking off a successful coast-to-coast film festival run, broadening the film's popularity with fans and the Hollywood cognoscenti.
A major international distributor with ties to Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Paramount and Metrodome UK, Boll AG has released such celebrated films as In the Name of the King (Jason Stratham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds), Alone in the Dark (Christian Slater, Tara Reid) and Bloodrayne (Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen).
"This is a momentous step forward in our company's brief two-year history that follows-up nicely on last year's deal with NBC/Universal for The Last Sentinel," said Thad Pryor, co-Chairman of World Films, Inc. "The Butcher's meteoric rise will no doubt continue through this deal, further fueling our strong momentum and confirming the bright future of World Films and the poets in our production pipeline."
The Butcher is a tale of a washed up ex-prize fighter turned mob enforcer, Merle Hench, who after a 20-year string of bad luck has 48 golden hours. The film stars Eric Roberts, a twice Academy Award-nominated actor -- Runaway Train (1985) and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984). Written and directed by Jesse Johnson, The Butcher features Finnish actress Irina Bjorklund, Keith David (Crash, Armageddon, Something About Mary), Michael Ironside (The Perfect Storm, Starship Troopers, Total Recall) and co-stars Robert Davi (License to Kill, Die Hard, The Goonies).
The Butcher's European premiere will be celebrated at Cannes during the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
