FIRST it was Michael Collins. Then it was the Guildford Four. And then it was Bobby Sands.

Now Bernadette McAliskey is set to become the latest controversial Republican to become the subject of a movie biopic.

It will be called The Roaring Girl and will focus on the early days of the fire brand republican politician who became the youngest ever woman elected to Westminster.

The movie will be directed by filmmaker Aisling Walsh, who is best known for her film Song For A Raggy Boy about abuse in the industrial schools.

The role of Bernadette McAliskey will be played by Sally Hawkins, a London actress who most recently starred in Mike Leigh’s Happy Go Lucky.

Walsh is currently completing The Daisy Chain starring Samantha Morton as a grieving woman who moves to a remote Irish village with her husband after losing a child.
