Lidgerwood Elementary Music Class to Go High-Tech With Qwest Foundation Teachers and Technology Donation

The Qwest Foundation today announced a grant of $10,000 to Tamie King of Lidgerwood Elementary in Spokane. The grant will fund new technology for the expansion of music elements and skills, which first- through sixth-grade students will utilize to create their own music compositions, write stories to match the mood and illustrate a scene. The pictures, music and words will be published in DVD format and shared at a music performance for parents.

"The use of technology in the classroom is very exciting!" said King, a music specialist at Lidgerwood Elementary. "Students believe that technology is cool, and they are drawn to be a part of this hip environment. Being able to offer my vision to students is a great way to expand and strengthen the learning that occurs in the music classroom."

The $10,000 Qwest Teachers and Technology grant will allow King to purchase a new laptop, MP3 players, sonar home studio, camera, headphones, microphones and projector. With the technology, students will be able to add research elements, personal narrative and visual content to their music project, then share it with classmates.

"It is wonderful to see educators such as Tamie King think outside of the box when it comes to the use of technology in the classroom," said Kirk Nelson, Qwest president for Washington. "Tamie's vision is inspiring, and we are honored to reward her with funds that will bring her vision to life."

The Qwest Foundation will present the $10,000 check to Tamie's Lidgerwood Elementary music class, Wednesday, May 21 at 11:30 a.m.

The Qwest Foundation thanks the Washington State Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) for their partnership. Through its Learning Technologies program, OSPI took the lead in promoting Teachers and Technology to Washington teachers and handled the administrative tasks that followed. OSPI is the primary agency charged with overseeing K-12 education in Washington state.
