Summerfield artist honored for determination

Summerfield artist Virginia Kassay is one of the top 100 semifinalists in the search for the winner of the Energizer Keep Going Hall of Fame, a contest created in 2006 to share peoples’ inspiring stories and honor individuals for their drive.

Kassay was chosen for her determination to help her daughter Emily, who has autism.

Kassay has reached out to Emily through their common love of art. Kassay’s paintings were the first thing that has ever drawn such an emotional response from Emily, whose autism was diagnosed when she was 19 months old. Now, every canvas Kassay paints is for Emily. Each painting reflects what it’s like to experience Emily’s world.

Kassay is among the semifinalists who will be entered into a second judging phase and narrowed to a pool of 10 finalists. A public vote online will determine one winner from the 10 finalists.

Voting for the 10 Keep Going Hall of Fame finalists will begin June 12. Check the Web site at www.energizer.com/halloffame

The winner receives a $10,000 cash prize plus a $5,000 donation to the winner’s favorite charity. The winner also will be formally honored Aug. 19 at an induction ceremony in St. Louis.
