Snake Show Slithers into Library
“Snakes Alive” with herpetologist Ron Cromer is coming to the Kanawha County Public Library as part of the Summer Library Club for children.
Cromer will present a lecture and bring two dozen harmless species of reptiles, including turtles, lizards and snakes tamed for petting.
Because of limited space, registration is required.
The program will be presented at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sissonville branch; at 3 and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Tyler Mountain YMCA in Cross Lanes; at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Albans branch; and at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Clendenin Community Center.
Additional presentations are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 12 at the downtown branch, at 6 p.m. June 12 at the Riverside branch, and at 11 a.m. June 13 at the Nitro Library.
Arts and crafts
festival scheduled
The 43rd annual Rhododendron Outdoor Arts and Crafts Festival will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Capitol Complex.
The public can browse a wide selection of quilts, afghans, dolls, blankets, baskets, stained glass, toys, carved pieces, candles, jams and jellies and purses.
Ashton Ernst and Peggy Cornell will provide entertainment.
Food and beverages will be available.
Art exhibits, photography and crafts will be judged, with the winners receiving certificates and monetary awards.
Kanawha Valley
Ringers plan show
The Kanawha Valley Ringers will present the handbell group’s fifth annual concert Sunday.
“Singin’ & Ringin’, Rockin’ & Rollin’” takes place at 3 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Corridor G.

Country singer Rhonda Vincent will open the summer concert season at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Mountain Lakes Amphitheater in Flatwoods.

Morrie’ continues
Kanawha Players will present “Tuesday with Morrie” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and have added a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
The performances will take place at the Players Theater, Washington Street East and Beauregard Street.
Admission is $16 adults and $10 for those younger than 18.

Schedule changed
for FestivAll events
As Charleston gears up for the annual FestivAll event June 20- 29, director Larry Groce says there are some corrections and changes to the schedule.
A complete schedule now is posted at www.festivall charleston.com, but some printed materials issued elsewhere have contained incorrect information.
The June 20 Live on the Levee features The Davisson Brothers Band, Brian Diller and Todd Burge. Earlier information issued by the city was incorrect.
Also, inserts that went into city sanitation bills contain venue mistakes. “Charleston: The Opera” performances at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. June 21 take place at the state Cultural Center Theater. The West Virginia Symphony’s 3 p.m. performance June 22 takes place at the Clay Center. Tickets to both of those events are available at the Clay Center box office.
Meanwhile, the screening of “Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden?” with special guest filmmaker, Beckley native Morgan Spurlock, at the WVSU Capitol Center has been changed to June 24, with a 5:30 p.m. reception and a 7 p.m. screening. Tickets to this event are available at the door.
Family artifact
workshop tonight
The West Virginia Archives and History Library is hosting a free session from 6 to 7 p.m. today to discuss and demonstrate scanning of family photographs and other keepsakes.
Genealogist Pam Gibson will lead the session in the Cultural Center at the Capitol Complex.

Pride Celebration
The Mister Pride West Virginia Concert, part of the annual West Virginia Pride Celebration and Festival, will take place at 10 p.m. Friday at the Broadway, 210 Leon Sullivan Way.
Admission for those age 21 and older is $10.
The Big Gay Yard Sale will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tap Room parking lot, 1022 Quarrier St.
This flea market is open to all. Individuals and clubs can also sell items.
The Power of One Dinner will be at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston House Holiday Inn. A reception at 6:30 p.m. will precede the dinner. Admission is $25 per person.
Marc Weintraub, a leading force in passing housing and employment protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual citizens of Charleston, will be honored with the Power of One award.
“Girl Power: A Night at the Park,” will be from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday at Appalachian Power Park. This girls-only party is for those 21 and older. Admission is $5. The restaurant and party deck will be open for the event.
The 12th annual Pride Festival with food, entertainment, unique shopping and information will be from 8-11 a.m. Sunday at Davis Park, Washington and Capitol streets.
The Pride Celebration will conclude with the Capture the Dream Parade at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Marchers will congregate at Haddad Riverfront Park at 12:30 p.m. and walk to Davis Park via Capitol Street.

Youth Arts Company
having auditions
The Contemporary Youth Arts Company will hold auditions for “Boxes 9: Boxes of Doom” at 3 p.m. Saturday at the WVSU Capitol Center Theater, 123 Summers St.
Teenagers are invited to audition. A 30-second memorized portion of a monologue, speech or soliloquy is required. Show dates are July 24-26.
Auditions for the new Dan Kehde play “Fred and Harriett” will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the theater.
The drama about the relationship between a transsexual teacher and his family and co-workers requires a cast of 15 actors 18 and older. Show dates are Aug. 1-2 and 8-9.

‘Grease’ auditions
continue tonight
Auditions for “Grease” continue at 7 p.m. today at the Charleston Light Opera Guild Theatre, 411 Tennessee Ave.
Participants should be prepared to sing with the Guild’s accompanist. Music from the show is preferred. If auditioners choose not to do show music, they should bring their own sheet music.
Dance auditions will be at 10 a.m. Saturday. Those auditioning should dress to dance. Combinations will be taught.
Parts are available for young men and women ages 16 through 30.
The show will be performed at the Clay Center July 25- 27 and Aug. 1-3.

The Kanawha County Public Library’s teen reading club kicks off at 6 p.m. today at the Scottish Rite Temple, 406 Capitol St.
Nashville recording artists the Redding Brothers will entertain with a free concert that’s open to all.

The library’s summer library club for children begins Saturday and continues through July 26.

plans special events
Theater West Virginia’s outdoor summer season performances of “Honey in the Rock” and “Hatfields and McCoys” will begin next week at Cliffside Amphitheater near Beckley.
The debut performance of “Honey and the Rock” will be Tuesday followed by “Hatfields and McCoys” on Wednesday. Throughout the summer, all performances will begin at 8:15 p.m.
Theater West Virginia is also planning to present “Cinderella” and “High School Musical” this summer.

to perform in Clay
The Rramblin’ Riversiders Country Skiffle Band fro Preston, England will be in concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Clay High School.
The concert is free but a donation will be taken to benefit the Food Pantry, operated by the Lighthouse Baptist Mission in Ivydale and the BC&G Excursion Railroad in Clay.
Filmmakers guild
