New Season Spans the Arts Spectrum

Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts has announced its 2008-09 season, a series of almost 50 acts that span the arts spectrum from dance to music to theater and beyond.
The Ferguson Broadway Series comprises four productions with two add-ons:
* “Nunsense” starring Sally Struthers, Nov. 14 and 15.
* “Sweeney Todd,” March 13 and 14.
* “Pajama Game,” April 3 and 4.
* “Ain’t Misbehavin’
” starring Ruben Studdard and Frenchie Davis, May 1-3.
* The add-ons, in which subscribers get a reduced price, are Shakespeare & Company’s “Hamlet,” Sept. 26 and 27 (the only nonmusical), and Disney’s “High School Musical 2,” Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
The season opens Sept. 5 with The Little River Band and Poco.
Some of the other popular music highlights are: Natalie Cole, Oct. 11; Burt Bacharach, Nov. 13; Tanya Tucker and The Imperials, Dec. 18; and Michael Bolton, Jan. 29.
Among the jazz perform-ances will be Branford Marsalis performing the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos, Nov. 5, and John Pizzarelli with Jane Monheit, March 5.
Dance productions will include: Inbal Pinto Dance Company performing “Shaker,” Oct. 16; Savion Glover’s Bare Soundz, Oct. 18 and 19; Compania Flamenco Jose Porcel, Nov. 2; and the Russian National Ballet Theatre, March 7.
The comedy acts will include: NBC’s “Last Comic Standing!” Live Tour, Sept. 26; The Capitol Steps, Oct. 17; The Smothers Brothers, April 30; and Tim Conway and Friends, May 6.
And highlights from a lineup of classical music will be: Boston Pops Orchestra, Dec. 2; The Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, Feb. 7; Male Choir of St. Petersburg, March 1; Teatro Lirico D’europa performing Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro,” March 15; and Jose Carreras, March 24.
