Troy Sterling Nies of Killdeer, a nationally recognized composer of movie music scores, composed an original piece that will be performed at 8 tonight at the Bismarck State College auditorium.

Nies was commissioned to write the piece by the North Dakota Music Teachers Association for its annual conference.

Nies said his composition will be performed by the Apollo Trio, a group of Bismarck musicians.

The performers are Arlene Gray on piano; Tonya Mertz, oboe; Rhonda Gowen, clarinet; and Sara Boyd, bassoon.

The work is titled “The Best Laid Plans,” inspired by John Steinbeck, author of “Of Mice and Men” and “The Winter Of Our Discontent.”

The concert will begin with a flute performance by Hannah Porter, the N.D. Music Teachers Association’s collegiate division winner.

Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
