Author Gore Vidal will speak with Jay Parini, author and Vidal's literary executor, on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at the Writers Guild Theater as a part of TOWN HALL's ongoing Writers Bloc series.
Vidal will discuss his latest work, "The Selected Essays of Gore Vidal," a volume comprised of "twenty-four of his forays into criticism, reviewing, political commentary, memoir, portraiture, and, occasionally, unfettered score settling."
Vidal began his prolific writing career at 19, with the publication of his military novel "Williwaw." He is the author of 23 novels, five plays, two memoirs, numerous screenplays and short stories, and well over 200 essays. Vidal's "United States (Essays 1952-92)" won the 1993 National Book Award.
Parini is a poet, novelist and biographer. He has authored works of fiction, nonfiction and biographies including "The Last Station and Gore Vidal: Writer Against the Grain." He has taught at Dartmouth College, Oxford University, and Middlebury College. Parini has edited numerous works, including "The Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature."
Throughout its 70-year history, TOWN HALL has hosted discussions with notable authors such as Carl Sagan and Ray Bradbury. TOWN HALL welcomes back Gore Vidal for the fourth time. In 1991, he delivered his address "War in the Persian Gulf: A Distraction from the War at Home?"
