Dracut, Tyngsboro Students Rack Up Awards

Jun. 17–BEVERLY — And the award goes to …

Students from Tyngsboro High School and Dracut High School walked away from the third annual North Shore Music Theater Spotlight Awards ceremony on June 2 with a little bit of hardware and pride in a job well done.

Twenty-four high schools and more than 1,000 students vied for top honors at the ceremony, which recognizes high-school students, teachers, musicians, directors, choreographers and others.

Tyngsboro’s Yanna Lantz won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Annas in Jesus Christ Superstar. Best Featured Performer Award went to Christian Bowers of Tyngsboro for his role as Caiaphas. Jesus Christ Superstar also won the awards for Best Costume Design (Karen Clougher) and Best Music Direction (Michelle Ladew).

Kevin Dubuc, a Dracut High School junior, won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Thernadier, in Les Miserables School Edition. In a surprise announcement, Dracut High School seniors Kerri Rachal and Lana Herzig, won parts in NSMT’s upcoming regional premier of Disney’s High School Musical 2, which runs from Dec. 18 to Jan. 11, 2009. Framingham High School took home seven of the 15 awards for its production of Once on this Island.

Owen Grover of Salem High School took Best Leading Actor honors for his role as Bobby Childs in Crazy on You. Salem also took home the Best Choreography Award. Marblehead High School’s Ariana Conte won the Best Leading Actress Award for her role as Sally Bowles in

Cabaret.

The ceremony was hosted by David Nathan Perlow and Addi McDaniel.

Presenters included Boston Globe theater critic Terry Byrne and Arts and Entertainment reporter Joyce Kulhawik. Mitchel Musso, one of the stars of Disney’s Hannah Montana, presented the awards for Best Leading Actor/Actress.

Winners in these categories, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress and Best Technical Crew each receive $1,000 to support their future education.
