Posted on: Friday, 20 June 2008, 12:00 CDT
From June 20-30 artnet Online Auctions will feature a special sale of Photographic Portraits celebrating icons of film, entertainment and popular culture from the 1930s-1960s.
Leading the sale is a selection of photographs of film stars including Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Marilyn Monroe. Among the highlights is a luminous photograph of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly backstage at the 28th Annual Academy Awards taken by Allen Grant in 1956 (estimate $7,000-8,000). Other highlights include the Garbo Portfolio I, 1929-1931, by Clarence Sinclair Bull, a portfolio of five gelatin silver prints that capture the star in various poses at the height of her career ($2,500-3,500) and Jean Harlow, "Bear Rug," 1934, a classic portrait of the actress by George Hurrell (estimate: $5,500-7,500).
The sale also celebrates music legends from the Jazz era to the 1960s with portraits of Duke Ellington, Charlie "Bird" Parker, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Bob Dylan. Duke Ellington, 1947, is an exuberant portrait of the Jazz great by William Gottlieb. Elvis Waving, 1958, one of several works in the sale by Life Magazine photographer Bill Ray, captures the enthusiasm of the young pop star as he embarks upon his military service (estimate: $1,500-2,000). Bob Dylan and Suze Rotolo, New York, 1963, by Don Hunstein is an atmospheric color photograph of the artist and his companion strolling in the snow (estimate $2,500-3,000).
"The photographic portraits in this sale offer collectors a rare glimpse into the lives of these legendary artists and performers," said Hans Neuendorf, CEO of artnet. "We are delighted to offer collectors such an outstanding selection of works by leading photographers."
