Operation DVD: Support the Troops
By Vanessa Overholser, The Morehead News, Kingston, Ky.
Jun. 24--Movie Gallery is soliciting donations of new and used DVDs and equipment to send to troops overseas.
Operation DVD will collect DVD and VCR tapes and DVD and VCR players through June 28.
"It was a combined effort with all 16 stores in our district," said Morehead store manager Molly Litteral. "We will be collecting movies from June 21 to June 28. We will take them as late as Sunday, June 29 because we cannot mail them out until Monday."
The goal for the movie rental chain is to collect 1,000 movies. According to the store flyer, movies are the number one source of entertainment for troops.
"Our men and women overseas are encouraged to stay indoors where it is safe, and many report where they are working they have limited sources of entertainment. Movies help to entertain our troops while giving them the feeling of being home," the flier said.
The corporate office supplied the chain with a movie special to help with their cause, Litteral said.
"We hope that with the buy two get two special will help and that customers will donate the free ones," she said.
There is no restriction on the type of movies donated. On Saturday, the store will open at 8 a.m. so that customers can bring their donations in and participate in the activities going on at the store. There will be door prizes, food and games for everyone.
"We have some community involvement," she said.
"The National Guard and the Haldeman Fire Department will be here. We are working on getting the Morehead Fire Department to bring their Fire Safety trailer for the children and we are seeking bands for the event," she said.
The store also is looking for volunteers. Those wanting to donate supplies or prizes can contact Litteral at 780-4523.
