Indian cinema has produced some great films in its time, one of them being Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sorrow), which is a modern Bollywood blockbuster.

Released in 2001 and directed by one of India’s leading film producers, Karan Johar, it tells the story of a wealthy and successful businessman, Yash Raichand (played by Amitabh Bachan) who provides his family with a lavish lifestyle.

His wife and two sons are his pride and joy. However Yash’s eldest son Rahul falls head over heels in love with a young and beautiful girl who belongs to a lower social class.

Rahul is forced to choose between the love of his life and his father’s decision. Rahul’s father finds his son’s choice very hard to accept and breaks all ties with him. Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) leaves India with his new love, Pooja, (played by Kajol) and settles in England.

After a 10-year separation, the story unfolds and Mr Raichand’s youngest son Rohan grows up and heads off in search of his long- lost brother. From here the story takes some twists and turns, with old wounds being exposed once again.

This film is beautifully directed and has encapsulated the ‘real’ Bollywood – an amalgamation of love, social barriers and family ties which Johar has combined perfectly to create a colourful and memorable film.

KKKG is a musical and with vocals from the legendary Lata Mangeshkar, and upcoming Sonu Nigam, it has one of the most breathtaking soundtracks of modern Indian cinema. Every song perfectly accompanies each emotional scene and evokes a multitude of feelings in the viewer.

With Bollywood’s most popular stars Amitabh Bachan and Shahrukh Khan, accompanied by an exceptional supportive cast such as Jaya Bachan, Kajol, Kareena Kapoor and Hrithik Roshan this film is one of Johar’s finest moments.
