Council Sponsoring Monthly Series of Vintage Film Screenings

July 10, 2008

Jul. 10–Marilyn Monroe, with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in the film “Some Like it Hot,” fills a big screen Saturday in Marysville as a vintage film series kicks off in support of the Sutter Performing Arts Center in Yuba City.

The classic is the first of six films planned through October at the Lee Burrows Art Center, 630 E St., Marysville, sponsored by the Sutter Performing Arts Association and the Yuba-Sutter Regional Arts Council.

“We tried to come up with some vintage films that would appeal on a broad spectrum to different people,” said Teri Tomlinson, event chairwoman and member of the Performing Arts Association executive board.

“We tried to get a comedy, a musical, some serious, some romance,” just all sorts of different things, she added.

Upcoming movies include:

–”Blue Hawaii” July 26; starring Elvis Presley.

–”Casablanca” Aug. 16; Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart.

–”Singin’ in the Rain” Sept. 6; Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds.

–”The Quiet Man” Sept. 20; John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.

–”From Here to Eternity” Oct. 11; Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr and Frank Sinatra.

All films are at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each or $120 for the series.

The cost includes hot popcorn before the movie, homemade desserts and discussions in the YSRAC courtyard following each film.

The site includes a screen about 8 feet by 4 feet in size and a full theatrical sound system, noted Jim Jenkins, Y-S Arts Council business manager. “It’s a large screen movie experience,” he said.

Tickets may be purchased in Marysville at the Y-S Regional Arts Council and in Yuba City at Kaffe T’Latta and the Yuba Sutter Mall Customer Service Kiosk.

The film series is “to get the word out that we (the Sutter Performing Arts Association) are here,” Tomlinson said, and maybe create interest in further fundraisers as well as attract volunteers.

For more information, contact Tomlinson at 671-0500 or the Sutter Performing Arts Association at 740-0105.
