Magic, fantasy and adventure play principal parts in both open- air features screening at Mesker Amphitheatre Friday and Saturday in this month's Movies at Mesker shows.
They all come into play in "Nim's Island" on Friday. The film stars Abigail Breslin as an imaginative young girl who lives in a world of fantasy on an isolated island she inhabits with her father, a scientist. Jodie Foster plays the girl's favorite fantasy author, who shows up to help when the father goes missing.
Wizards, witches and muggles mix it up Saturday, when "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the most recent film adaptation from J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series, plays.
Both movies will begin at 8:15 p.m. at Mesker Amphitheatre, next to the nearly completed new entrance to Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden atop Mesker Park Drive.
The theater will open at 7 p.m., with $1 hamburgers and other refreshments available at the snack bar.
Admission is free with a pass, which is available at more than a dozen area sponsoring locations, or $3 without a pass.
Free passes for two are available at offices for Roberts Stadium, The Centre, Swonder Ice Arena and other sponsors listed at www.smgevansville.com online.
It's the second of four weekends of back-to-back family movies scheduled each month this summer at Mesker Amphitheatre. Other films, to be announced within a week or two of their screenings, will play Aug. 15 and 16 and Sept. 5 and 6.
