What’s Happened To..Huey Lewis?

July 12, 2008

THE POWER of love is a curious thing, is it not? It makes one man weep, and another man sing. It can change a hawk into a little white dove. Not literally, obviously; that would be impossible, but you get my drift. The point is, it’s more than a feeling. It’s strong and it’s sudden and it’s cruel sometimes, but it might just save your life.

For these majestic pearls of wisdom, we have Huey Lewis to thank. The words are, of course, from the Huey Lewis and the News hit The Power of Love, a song which will be forever accompanied by a mental image of a young Michael J Fox hitching lifts from cars while on his skateboard, shortly before travelling back in time and banging his head, waking up to discover his teenage mother attempting to seduce him. That’s the power of love, indeed.

Anyway, Huey still has that mischievous smile, those scarily big eyebrows and that perma-tanned face. Last year he played Billy Flynn in the Broadway production of Chicago as well as in a film you may not have heard of called Graduation (it’s about four teenagers who plan to rob a bank during their high school graduation ceremony). His acting career has previously included such notable landmarks as a full frontal nude scene in Robert Altman’s Short Cuts and, more disturbingly, singing karaoke with Gwyneth Paltrow in Duets, a film that most Gwyneth Paltrow fans don’t remember, never mind Huey Lewis fans.

Musically, he is still much loved. Only last week he performed in front of half a million people on the west lawn of the US Capitol in Washington. That’s the power of love.
