Violinist in a Class of His Own

July 12, 2008

A YOUNG fiddle player from Scotland yesterday became the first performer ever at Llangollen to be officially classed as “exceptional”.

Previously any performers who scored 90% or more were classed only as “excellent”, but with so many coming into that category Eisteddfod organisers decided to classify as “exceptional” anyone who achieved 95% or more.

Graham Mackenzie, 16, of Inverness, so impressed the judges in the Celtic instrumental solo competition yesterday that he scored more than 95%.

“I’m shocked,” he said when told.

He has played the fiddle since he was six, and won the Celtic solo competition at Llangollen last year.

He also took part in a separate competition yesterday with the Mackenzie Ensemble – with music-teacher mum Alison on the piano and brother Robbie, 12, on second fiddle.

“I’m very proud of Graham,” she said.

“We’ve been performing as a family for six years.”
