Williams, perhaps a modern equivalent of the Marine Bands legendary 17th Director John Philip Sousa, will lead the band in some of his most beloved and well-known compositions, including music from the films Superman, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Jaws, the Indiana Jonesfilms, Star Wars, and E.T. (the Extra-Terrestrial). Other highlights include Suite from The Reivers, featuring narration by former Wyoming Senator The Honorable Alan Simpson, and images from selected movies playing along on a screen above the band.
This is the second time the legendary conductor will lead the band in a performance of his music. The invitation to conduct these outstanding musicians confers on me a very great honor, and fills me with what I hope is a permissible level of pride, Williams said. Im delighted to be joining the celebration of one of our nations most outstanding artistic institutions, and I look forward to what is certain to be a joyous musical reunion.
The anniversary gala is free but tickets are required. Currently, all tickets have been distributed. However, 15 minutes prior to the concert, at 7:45 p.m., all tickets become void and non-ticket holders will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis.
The Marine Band is Americas oldest professional musical organization. Founded in 1798, the band has performed for every U.S. President since John Adams. Given the title The Presidents Own by Thomas Jefferson, the Marine Bands primary mission is to provide music for the President of the United States and the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
