Schoolchildren Get Taste of Sri Lankan Dance

July 16, 2008

YOUNG people from a County Durham school have been entertained by a troupe of Sri Lankan drummers and dancers.

They performed at Lumley Junior School, in Great Lumley, near Chester-le-Street, yesterday.

The dancers were schoolchildren from Kandy, in Sri Lanka, and were in the NorthEast to perform at the Billingham Festival from Saturday.

Headteacher James Birleson said: “It has gone really well.

“The children have been looking forward to this since we knew they were coming.

“They have been enthralled by the drums, which I can hear from my office, and the bright colourful costumes.

“It has really livened the place up.”
