Reviews: SINGLES

THE B-52S Juliet Of The Spirits

VERDICT: *****

INSPIRED by Federico Fellini's 1965 film Giulietta Degli Spiriti, this download single is not as frantic as many of the tracks on the B-52's Funplex album, and it's all the better for it. Stylish and inventive, Kate and Cindy's voices blend beautifully, while the beat is suitably hypnotic.

THE TING TINGS Shut Up And Let Me Go

VERDICT: *****

SOUNDING like the natural successor to Blondie's Rapture, The Ting Tings' newie has an infectious 70s-style funk-based riff overlaid by street-smart lyrics from Debbie Harry-lookalike Katie White (pictured).

VERDICT: *****

A WORK of fiction, based on fact, Cath reflects the band's experiences of friends who have married but have become isolated.

Ben Gibbard's soaring vocals and the song's addictive hooks make this a winner all the way.

STIFF DYLANS Ultraviolet

VERDICT: *****

FORMED for new movie Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, which opened in Birmingham yesterday, Stiff Dylans have since become a 'proper' band, writing and recording new material. This debut single, featured in the film, is Busted/ McFly-style pop-punk that will appeal to the teens.
