One More Mile for Pipers

THE Pipers Trail makes its way up the Royal Mile at the end of a 470-mile epic journey.

A hundred military, civilian and amateur pipers were joined by drummers and marchers for the event, the culmination of a journey that started in Lerwick in the Shetlands on June 17.

The exercise was designed to bring the military closer to members of the community. As the trail made its way around the country, army pipe majors stopped off to give musical workshops, including a series at Craigmount High School. Pupils from the school’s pipe band joined the professionals on parade from Holyrood Palace to St Giles Cathedral during Saturday’s procession.

The parade was led by Pipe Major Scott Taylor, who has just stepped down from his role at the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming in order to return to active service.

A theatrical performance was planned for the evening at the Ross Bandstand in Princes Street Gardens. The event tied in with Veterans’ Day and the 100th Anniversary of the Territorial Army.
