Overview and Analysis of Australia's Digital TV - Set-Top Box Industry

Posted on: Monday, 28 July 2008, 21:00 CDT

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/fb7cdc/australia_digita) has announced the addition of the "Australia - Digital TV - Set-Top Box Overview and Analysis" report to their offering.

Back in the mid-1990s the government guaranteed a common standard for Set-top Boxes. The STB is an infrastructure technology and should not be used to create yet another monopoly. This represents the information highway gateway to interactive services over broadcasting technologies (free-to-air TV, cable TV and satellite TV), yet there is still no common standard. The issue has become more urgent in the wake of the new pay TV monopoly after Optus' withdrawal from the pay TV content market. In March 2007 the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission finalised the approval of a special access undertaking digital access deal with Foxtel. By 2008 the market was shifting to PVRs and further updates on this development are provided in a separate report. A significant proportion of flat screen plasma and LCD televisions sold in Australia are now built in digital FTA tuners, removing the need to have a separate digital FTA STB.
