Officials at the San Francisco Zoo hoped to learn Wednesday what caused the death of a 9-year-old female giraffe named Gezi.
The giraffe, who gave birth to a calf on February 25, collapsed Tuesday afternoon from cardiac and respiratory arrest, the Bay City News reports.
Zookeepers said Gezi's appetite had decreased recently, prompting them to give her antibiotics and fluids.
Veterinarians had examined the giraffe on the morning of her death and rechecked her blood, zoo officials said.
The average life span of a female giraffe in captivity is approximately 25 years.
Gezi came to the San Francisco Zoo at the age of 2. She is survived by two calves, one male and one female.
