Film Features an Author Cameo

Stephenie Meyer has a cameo in the movie version of her novel Twilight, but the author isn't eager to see her acting debut.

"That's the only part I'm never going to watch," she says.

Meyer has no lines in the movie -- she says she was too shy -- but she can be seen sitting at a lunch counter in a diner. It's a scene where Bella and her father are dining out in Forks, Wash., the town where most of the story takes place.

"It just seemed like the kind of thing the fans would love," director Catherine Hardwicke says. "And she was great."

Meyer spent time on the Oregon set of Twilight, which is based on the first of her four teen vampire novels. The film stars Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as the vampire heartthrob Edward, and is due in theaters Dec. 12.

Last week, 6,500 fans, some camping overnight, showed up at Comic-Con in San Diego to see a trailer and talk with Meyer and cast members. Meyer hasn't seen the entire movie, but she likes the 15 minutes she has seen.

The toughest thing for Hardwicke was deciding which parts of the book to leave out. "I wish I could make a six-hour movie," she says. "When you're a fan like I am, it's hard to let anything go."

Meyer likes the choices the director made. "I'd be watching what Catherine did with a scene, and I'd think to myself, 'Why didn't I think of that?'" (c) Copyright 2008 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Co. Inc.
