Feast Eyes on Cars Next Sunday
By Nancy Chipman Powers, Detroit Free Press
Aug. 3--Classic car buffs are eagerly awaiting the Woodward Dream Cruise on Aug. 16.Gearheads can get a head start next Sunday, Aug. 10, at two shows: the Troy Traffic Jam: Chrome, Muscle and Music, and Rochester's Rockin' Rods.
Motoring Memories, which was held in past years at the Troy Museum, is now the Troy Traffic Jam. And to accommodate more than 100 cars, it's now held at the Columbia Center on West Big Beaver.
The show will feature a display of classic automobiles, hot rods and muscle cars, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; music by DJ Bob Steel; a taste fest from area restaurants, and children's activities.
It's free to view the cars. There is a $20 fee for classic car parking, which benefits the Troy Historical Society Heritage Campaign to relocate and restore the Historic Johnson Niles home.
For details about the Troy Traffic Jam, call 248-524-1147 or go to www.troymi.gov/carshow.
Billed as a Dream Cruise warm-up, the Rochester Lions Club's ninth annual Rockin' Rods will feature hundreds of cars on the street and on the grounds of the Leader Dog Training Center on Walnut.
"Transformers," the movie, will be shown on a flat-screen television throughout the show. Memorabilia from the movie will be on display including Bumblebee, a 1976 Camaro that was the Autobot hero of the film; a movie backdrop; posters, and a 14-foot character from the movie.
The "Transformers" display is courtesy of Championship Auto Shows Inc. of Auburn Hills, which puts on Autorama in Detroit. There also will be music, refreshments, a 50/50 raffle and door prizes.
It's $15 to reserve a spot for a classic car and the deadline is Friday.
To register and for details about Rockin' Rods, call Dennis Scott at 248-651-4155 or go to www.rochesterlionsclub.org
