Contestant Glad He Got a Shot

August 5, 2008

By Travina Coleman, Muskogee Phoenix, Okla.

Aug. 5–Ken Beard gave his advice for people thinking of entering KOTV’s Channel 6′s “Gimme the Mike” in the future:

“Relax and enjoy the music and the story the music tells.”

Beard of Muskogee made his television debut on the contest Monday night after making it through auditions earlier in the summer.

And regardless of the endless dialing his family and friends did, he didn’t win the show or the wild card vote. The wild card vote is the viewer’s opportunity to call in and vote for their favorite.

“I routinely stopped and shook my head and thought, ‘What are you doing,’” he said. “I really enjoyed talking to the young people there. I was glad Kristyn Paschal won. She was good.”

Beard said his “diversion to partial insanity” was fun and he said he is happy to be moving on with his passion as a composer.

“I will continue to write more choral music and work on getting it published,” he said. “I am currently working on a Web site that would make my music available to all choir directors. If that doesn’t work, I will go back to submitting music to publishers.”

Beard said he was glad he didn’t embarrass himself or his children.

“I really thought it would be embarrassing,” he said. “I was glad to find out it wasn’t too bad watching myself.”

Watch the finale at 7 p.m. Aug. 18.
