Live Music Party at Square Records

By Malcolm X Abram, The Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio

Aug. 7--Hard to believe it's been five years since Square Records opened in Highland Square. It's even harder to believe that it's still open, given the topsy-turvy music industry and the slow death of buying music in a physical format. To celebrate, Square will play host to two days of live, in-store music. On Friday, New Body Type featuring members of Houseguest, Human Caveman, Ghostman and Sandman will perform along with mellow indie rock band Dinomania, which has a free EP called Text Messages available online at http://www. /> barkandhiss .com/ dinomania/. Following the concert, all are invited downtown to the Lockview where DJs from Cleveland record store Music Saves will spin records on the restaurant's rooftop patio.

On Saturday night, the Square store walls will be begging for mercy from the dissonant, freewheeling (occasionally musical) sounds of Tusco Terror and No Don't. Following that show, the shebang moves down the block to The Matinee for more record spinning and celebration.

Speaking of the Lockview, the space formerly known as the Lime Spider has begun hosting some live music on Fridays, including local jazz combos, and not-too-loud singer/songwriter types. This Friday night, it's rockabilly twosome the Shane Vain & Joey Kash Duo. Every Saturday night at 10 on the rooftop patio, DJ Forrest Getumgump spins Smokin' Soul, digging deep into his many crates of vinyl and pulling out everything from obscure '60s funk to '70s disco and R&B hits to classic hip-hop from the '80s and '90s. There's plenty of room to dance on the rooftop, if you are so inclined, or simply sit and nod your head to funky sounds for a couple of hours.
