Catalina Theater Company Has Redlands Roots
CATALINA – The new Santa Catalina Island Company theatrical series is being headed by Steven Sabel and Judy Johansen of Redlands.
The series consists of live musical theater productions to be presented in the historic Avalon Theatre in the Catalina Casino on Catalina Island.
While the shows will take place in Catalina, cast and crew will be assembled in Redlands where early rehearsals and production aspects will take place before the whole show moves to Catalina for performances.
Sabel, who serves as producer and director, has appeared in a number of musicals and operas for the Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival, as well as productions on stage at Redlands Footlighters. He founded the Redlands Shakespeare Festival in 2004.
Johansen, who serves as musical director, was an accompanist for many Redlands Bowl musicals, as well as Riverside Master Chorale, California Baptist University and Riverside County Philharmonic. She also taught music at Redlands Playschool and Learning Through Music in Redlands.
The first production is the Broadway musical “Grease,” which is scheduled to run on Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6, at 8 p.m.
