Magical Music Event at Harbour

August 20, 2008

By LIZ PHILLIPS

Patriotic songs rang around Brixham harbourside as the town band and Orpheus choir joined forces to recreate the Albert Hall atmosphere of The Proms.

All the old favourites such as Land of Hope and Glory and It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary were on the programme as the two musical groups performed to their delighted audience.

Community singing and flag-waving brought a real touch of the old Promenade Concert atmosphere, and the audience gave generously to a collection to be split between Brixham Does Care and the Shopmobility scooters service.

Holidaymaker Geoffrey Dalton, 70, from Scunthorpe, said: “It’s the first time I’ve been to one of these waterfront concerts, and it makes you really proud to be British.

“My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed it and the sound carrying over the water was quite magical.”

The big finale to Brixham town band’s Monday and Thursday open air concert season on September 4 is a joint concert with fellow- musicians from Totnes Town Band.

The South Hams musicians are busy raising up to pounds6,000 to travel to Harrogate to compete in the British Brass Band Championships.

So far, more than pounds2,000 has been raised but they hope the final waterfront performance in September at 8pm will appeal to generous donors.

Their Brixham colleagues are rehearsing for a big local competition in Exmouth next month on September 15.

It’s a light-hearted entertainment contest with their own free choice of music to keep the crowds and the judges entertained.
