Norfolk Fest Puts Focus on Black Filmmakers

The Virginian-Pilot

The projectors are heating up at the Attucks Theatre as the Mid Atlantic Black Film Festival starts rolling today.

The annual juried competition is a showcase for independent filmmakers worldwide.

Highlights include the Short and Student Film Competition, Kidz Film Series, several feature-length films, workshops and the pitchathon.

In that event, storytellers will pitch their concepts for movies to a panel of industry insiders and members of the audience. Then, each of the two groups will pick their favorite pitches. That event, with $10 admission, is at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton. All films will be shown at the theater.

Tonight's headliner film, at 7, is "Prince Among Slaves," about a slave ship .

The awards ceremony and closing film, "America the Beautiful," are at 7 p.m. Saturday.
