Recently, the San Jose Mercury News referred to John Mayer as "part-time guitarist and full-time raconteur," in a snarky article concerning his alleged breakup with girlfriend Jennifer Aniston. This piece, of course, was one of countless near-identical concerning the supposed exploits of the guitar-slinging Lothario. Hey, here's a thought: Find something else to report on! Maybe something that doesn't involve the love life of a famous person.
Mayer is hardly a "part-time guitar player." He's a serious musician on a quest to better himself, like him or not. What he does with whatever spare time he manages to grab should be his own business. All of this nonsense is threatening to overshadow the fact that Mayer is one of his generation's finest pop/rock musicians. In fact, he's one of the only cats in his age group commanding a mainstream following who is actually attempting to make pop art that also qualifies as interesting, well-played and smartly written music. This fact doesn't get mentioned too often these days, what with all the Jessica and Jen blather circulating ad infinitum. Mayer and his band return to the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center at 7:30 tonight. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and LiveNation.com.
