Wedding Drama Helps Mela Get Under Way
EDINBURGH’S annual Mela Festival has opened with a performance of Sapno ki Shaadi, above, a drama about a traditional Asian wedding .
The event took place in the Big Top at Ocean Terminal, and the festival continues this week with a combination of theatre, dance and music for all the family.
The Mela – the word means “gathering” in the ancient language of Sanskrit – combines the arts with opportunities to sample food and crafts from a range of cultures throughout the world.
Among this year’s events are the Scottish premieres of From Soho Road to the Punjab, which tells the story of UK Bhangra through personal photo albums, scrapbooks and record collections, and Oscar- nominated 1957 film Mother India.
