Wedding Day Drama Kicks Off the Mela
EDINBURGH’S annual Mela Festival has opened with a performance of Sapno ki Shaadi, above, a drama about a traditional Asian wedding. The event took place in the Big Top at Ocean Terminal, and the festival continues this week with a combination of theatre, dance and music for all the family.
The Mela – the word means “gathering” in the ancient language of Sanskrit – combines the arts with opportunities to sample food and crafts from a range of cultures throughout the world. Among this year’s events are the Scottish premiereS of From Soho Road to the Punjab, which tells the story of UK Bhangra and Oscar-nominated 1957 film Mother India.
