Extras Souled on Stardom As Casino Returns
By LAURA NAYLOR
Extras in a film charting Stoke-on-Trent’s Northern Soul scene in the 1970s have been getting a taste of stardom.
Filming of Souled Out is taking place at the King’s Hall in Stoke, which is being used to replicate the legendary Wigan Casino – where much of the action takes place.
The film tells the story of Stoke City fan Joe McCain, who learns about life and love through the music.
Movie makers Ipso Facto Films are shooting at a variety of city locations and around 300 extras were needed for filming on Saturday.
Student Ash Yates, aged 21, from Leek, said: “I’ve grown up with Northern Soul, but I wouldn’t describe myself as a follower.
“I heard that the producers needed extras so I thought I’d come along. This is my first time on a film set.
“I’ve always been passionate about films, and this is my first experience of how they are made. The music has been very enjoyable. I’ve recognised a couple of the tunes.”
Purchasing assistant Sue Wood, from Sandbach, said: “I was dragged along, but I’ve really enjoyed it.
“I came for the music – I’m a true Soulie. I want them to make a sequel where Joe McCain is grown up, and keeps it going like the true Northern Soul scene.
“Appearing as an extra has been a good experience for people of all ages.”
Machine operator Carl Haselden, from Sandbach, had come with a wig to ensure he looked the part.
The 45-year-old said: “I go to Northern Soul nights all the time, and I heard about this film on the soul scene.
“The atmosphere and music while making this film is very true to life.
“I hope to see myself in the movie, in the background.”
Anne Gilby, a support worker at Shelton Day Service, is also an avid fan.
The 56-year-old, of Newcastle, said: “I’ve been going to Northern Soul nights since I was 13.
“I really enjoy the music – I was brought up on it.
“It has been brilliant to be an extra in the film.”
Housewife Bernadette Pepper, from Newcastle, was with her 19- year-old daughter Donna who has a supporting role in the film.
The 53-year-old said: “I love Northern Soul, and Donna has been going with me to events since she was aged about 12.
“There has been a lot of standing about during the filming, but when it’s all finished it will be worth it.”
Producer Christine Alderson said the movie-makers had been more than impressed by the extras.
She said: “It has been a fantastic day of filming.
“There has been a real energy from the people taking part.
“Film-making takes a long time, and everyone has been very patient.
“They all look great and dance really well, and have had a fantastic attitude.”
