Our Search Begins for Carol’s Successor
By mark BRITTAIN
FAREWELL, shortly, also to Carol Vorderman. Channel 4 has just launched its search for a new man or woman to fill the TV presenter’s fragrant shoes.
The Countdown stalwart and I mathematical mastermind who I grew up in Prestatyn and at one time attended the Roman Catholic comprehensive Blessed Edward Jones High School in Rhyl before moving on to Cambridge University, is, as has been well documented, leaving the cult show at the end of this year, after 26 (some say 25) loyal years, having been offered a reported 90% pay cut.
Last week it was announced that the broadcaster is due to mark the departure of both Ms Vorderman and Des O’Connor, with a special edition of the programme.
Channel 4 head of daytime TV, Helen Warner, said: “We realise Carol’s shoes are extremely difficult ones to fill, as she has done such an amazing job on Countdown over the past 25 years. However, just as we found Carol through an ad in a local paper, we really hope we can do the same again.” Daily Post readers please note.
Channel 4 is, by all accounts, looking for applicants with “charm and charisma to appeal to viewers” and “excellent numeric and literacy skills”. Previous TV experience is not necessary and applicants have been asked to apply and submit a photograph of themselves through the show’s website. Hopefuls will attend auditions with Countdown producers and the new recruit will appear on screen in January next year.
Based on the above criteria I have every expectation of seeing the position filled by another brainy son or daughter of North Wales.
