Isaac Theatre Royal’s centennial year celebrations continue with the launch of a new logo for one of Christchurch’s cultural landmarks – and the announcement of a new production of a groundbreaking 20th- century musical.

“The existing Isaac Theatre Royal brand logo has served the theatre well in the past. However, the directors of the Theatre Royal Charitable Foundation felt that it was timely to review it to ensure that the theatre had a visual representation which was relevant to current marketing activities and the next 100 years,” spokeswoman Jane Bryden says.

After taking the theatre’s history, heritage values and role in the city’s artistic life into account, the new logo was designed by Harvey Cameron Advertising and Griffin Press.

The familiar crown has been retained and the name is unchanged, but the new design features a contemporary font and royal blue and gold colours.

“It is unique and special, reflecting a special setting. It is contemporary and upmarket,” Bryden says.

“The board’s heritage committee ensures that the theatre’s heritage and history is considered in any necessary building work and publications. It is currently assessing the options and implications of restoring the building’s facade and veranda.”

In a second announcement, Showbiz Christchurch (Christchurch Operatic) has announced that it has become the first amateur group in the world to secure the rights to produce the musical Miss Saigon.

Showbiz Christchurch’s production will be at the Isaac Theatre Royal in April next year. It will involve a consortium of New Zealand theatrical companies who will build the show, using new visual techniques and set design.
