Pint and a Movie Please

August 27, 2008

CLASSIC movie fans will be able to wash their popcorn down with a pint when a pub opens a mini cinema.

While pub landlords are scratching their heads trying to find ways to beat the credit crunch and a drop in profits since the smoking ban came into practice, John Horton, landlord of The New Inn in Walsall, has come up with the unusual idea of showing films at the venue to boost trade.

The pub, in John Street, which is known to locals as the Pretty Bricks, has an upstairs room with a projector and screen already set up.

Mr Horton said movies, right from the beginning of cinema through to the modern era, will be shown when it opens in a few weeks time.

Younger regulars will be able to experience classics such as Casablanca, Some Like It Hot and the Marx Brothers in a cinema setting for the first time.

Mr Horton said: “We need to provide some sort of attractions to get more people in here and I thought it would be good to show films as part of that.

“It seems to me that we would be missing a trick if we did not show movies as we already have the projector and the screen set up.

“The room upstairs is ideal as it has good depth and the sound travels well.

“People may want to come to watch a film in the pub and enjoy the atmosphere with a pint of real ale.”
