Flourishing Fair is Back Again
One of Dartmoor’s oldest country fairs is to be held on September 9.
Thought to date back to the early 19th century, Widecombe Fair now attracts thousands of visitors and generates interest worldwide.
This year will see sheep, cattle, horse and pony classes, a family dog show, terrier-racing, a gymkhana, sheep-shearing and many other events including the Uncle Tom Cobley Downhill Race.
Village schoolchildren will give a dancing display and there will be vintage machinery, a wide range of trade stands and a marquee devoted to local history.
The evening sees more fun, ending with music and dance from 9pm to midnight by arrangement with local Young Farmers’ Clubs.
Main venue is the Fairfield right opposite the school with adjacent free parking. The day’s events will begin at 9am and entry is pounds6 (under-16s free).
