Road Musical Gears Up for Its TV Journey

August 28, 2008

THE A1 might seem like a road that would inspire its users to curse through gritted teeth rather than break into song.

But a musical based on the lives of those who use the Edinburgh to London route and those who live close by is to be screened tomorrow.

Described by its producers as the “most insane documentary ever made”, A1: The Road Musical will travel the length of the route, ending in Edinburgh.

Finding people local to the road through word of mouth and the press, filmmaker Benjamin Till interviewed them about their stories, adapted them as song lyrics and set them to music.

He said: “I wanted to celebrate the extraordinary stories in every ordinary life. It’s always struck me that whether in times of great happiness or great sadness, people express themselves through song, so a musical felt like a fitting way to capture these peoples’ stories.”

A1: The Road Musical will be shown on Channel 4 tomorrow at 7.30pm.
