Matthew and Kate Fail to Strike It Rich in Tale of Long- Losttreasure ; DVD

Also available to buy pounds 19.99.

MATTHEW McCONAUGHEY stars as treasure hunter Ben 'Finn' Finnegan who discovers evidence of a legendary 18th-century sunken booty called The Queen's Dowry.

He shares the secret with ex-wife Tess (Kate Hudson) but she is unimpressed so Finn blags his way on board the luxury yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), where Tess now works as a steward, but archrival Moe (Ray Winstone) isalready in hot pursuit of the prize.

Fool's Gold is all at sea from the opening frames, failing to remain afloat either as an action adventure or as a frothy comedy.

Co-stars compete to see who can create the most unintentional comedy with their accent and Sutherland's strained, plummy British tones are as unconvincing as Winstone's wandering American.

DVD extras include featurette and gag reel. *****

ON April 3, 2008, the deadly Reaper virus explodes on the streets of Glasgow, forcing the UK government to quarantine the whole of Scotland.

Twenty-seven years later, the virus re-surfaces in the overcrowded squats of London and Bob Hoskins, as security chief Bill Nelson, has the job of assembling a crack team to infiltrate the deserted Scottish laboratory of scientist Dr Kane (MalcolmMcDowell) to find a cure.

Doomsday is a post-apocalyptic action romp with echoes of the vastly superior 28 Days Later, its sequel and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

Neil Marshall's film begins promisingly but skitters into the realm of the ridiculous and he sates his appetite for on-screen carnage with gratuitous dismemberment and decapitation, including one character being flambeed alive then eaten by a carnivorousrabble.

Cheery. Bonus features include featurettes. *****
