Around Town: Centenary of Adult Classes

A CELEBRATION of 100 years of adult education in Edinburgh is to take place tomorrow.

Records and photographs of class programmes from as far back as 1908

will be on show at the open event taking place at Drummond Community High School between 11am and 3pm.

Zoo discussion evolves from Darwin’s theories

A DISCUSSION on the theory of evolution is to be held at Edinburgh Zoo next month.

The talk, Evolution Versus Intelligent Design, will be led by Stuart Ritchie, president of Edinburgh University’s humanist society, to mark 200 years since Charles Darwin’s birth.

Stephen Woollard, of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in Darwin 200 and we encourage visitors to engage and learn about Darwin’s important scientific theories.”

The talk takes place on September 4 at 7.30pm.

Youths make Capital better

YOUNG people from across Edinburgh are set to gather tomorrow to discuss an action plan to make the city a better place for them to live.

The delegates attending the YoungEdinburgh conference will meet with councillors and health, police and voluntary groups.

INDIE starlets Sergeant will celebrate the release of their new record with an acoustic performance at HMV in Edinburgh.

The Fife-based four-piece, who performed at this year’s T in the Park, will play at the Princes Street store on Monday at 5.30pm.

Garrett’s in tune for city musical

SOPRANO Lesley Garrett, left, is to appear in a version of the musical Carousel, due to be staged in Edinburgh.

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic

has captivated audiences across the world since its Broadway opening in 1945.

Also starring Jeremiah James and Alexandra Silber, the musical will be at the Festival Theatre from October 6 to 11.

Later learning ‘preferred to schooldays’

A CITY education centre has welcomed a new survey showing 78 per cent of adults prefer learning later in life to their schooldays.

The survey, carried out by IT and office skills training specialists Pitman Training, also discovered that 47 per cent wish they had tried harder at school.

“One of the most exciting things about learning as an adult is the self confidence that it can help you gain,” says Fran Maclean, managing director of Pitman Training in Edinburgh.

Jewish writer slams Israeli music show

A CITY-born Jewish writer has called on organisers of the Edinburgh International Festival to withdraw an invitation to a group of Israeli musicians.

The Jerusalem Quartet is set to perform at the Queens Hall today.

But Marion Woolfson, the honorary president of the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, said she could not understand why the group had been asked to perform at the festival, accusing Israel of promoting “apartheid”.
