People – Celebs Hope to Silence Guns for Day
Jude Law is visiting Afghanistan to promote peace in the war- ravaged country.
Together with director Jeremy Gilley, the Oscar-nominated Law has returned to Afghanistan for Peace Day – an annual observation on Sept. 21 urging a global cease-fire and nonviolence.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted Peace Day in 2001, following a lobbying campaign by Gilley, which he documented in the film “Peace One Day.”
“When I left Kabul last year, I was hugely moved not by the conflict that I have read so much about, but by the people’s courage and the people’s sense of hope,” Law told reporters in Kabul .
Noted for his roles in movies such as “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Cold Mountain,” Law helped Gilley produce his second documentary film, called “The Day After Peace.” The documentary also features former U.N. chief Kofi Annan, the Dalai Lama, Angelina Jolie, Annie Lennox and Jonny Lee Miller . Law said the movie “was the most important film I have been part of.”
Law and Gilley, who arrived in Kabul on Sunday, are to meet President Hamid Karzai, top NATO and U.N. officials, and members of the aid community.
Last year, they traveled and filmed in treacherous areas of eastern Afghanistan to help promote the day, on which they hope weapons will fall silent, allowing help to reach those most in need.

Gandolfini marries in Hawaii
People Magazine reports that “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, 46, and former model Deborah Lin, 40, tied the knot Saturday in her hometown of Honolulu. A wedding guest told the mag: “There was a nice big kiss at the end with both hands on the cheeks” as the two were united. “They looked great.”
The small church ceremony was attended by friends and family. The bride, said People, walked down the aisle to a harp version of “The Hawaiian Wedding Song” and Gandolfini’s 8-year-old son, Michael (from his marriage to Marcy Wudarsk, which ended in 2002), was best man.
‘Diddy’ flies commercial
Fuel prices have grounded Diddy.
Sean “Diddy” Combs complained about the “… too high” price of gas and pleaded for free oil from his “Saudi Arabia brothers and sisters” in a YouTube video posted Wednesday. The hip-hop mogul said he is now flying on commercial airlines instead of in private jets, which Combs said had previously cost him $200,000 and up for a roundtrip between New York and Los Angeles.
“I’m actually flying commercial,” Diddy said before walking onto an airplane, sitting in a seat and flashing his boarding pass to the camera. “That’s how high gas prices are. I’m at the gate right now. This is really happening, proof gas prices are too high. Tell whoever the next president is we need to bring gas prices down.”
