Longcheer Holdings LTD., a leading manufacturer of 2G and 3G cellular handsets, announced today that it has selected Newport Media Inc. to provide system solutions for its upcoming release of TV enabled 2G handsets. The three different models being introduced address different segments of the mobile TV market.
-- TV350 - GSM/GPRS handset that supports the widely deployed DVB-T digital television standard using Newport Media's NMI305 DVB-T SOC.
-- DT100 - GSM/GPRS handset that supports DVB-H as well as DVB-T using the NMI310 DVB-T/H IC.
-- IT100 - GSM/GPRS handset that supports the Brazilian ISDB-T mobile digital television standard using the NMI320 ISDB-T IC.
The TV350, DT100 and IT100 were developed in order to provide a compelling TV centric user experience at price points significantly below competing 3G based products.
"Newport Media is very excited about the family of mobile TV products that Longcheer has announced. The DVB-T and ISDB-T products address the free to air market at price points that average consumers can easily embrace," said Mohy Abdelgany, president and chief executive officer of Newport Media. "The DVB-H handset is a natural extension of this consumer friendly concept to the subscription based market segment."
All three handsets will be demonstrated at Newport Media's booth (M483), inside the Mobile Zone at IBC 2008, Sept. 12-16, in Amsterdam.
"We are very impressed with Newport Media's technical support and comprehensive product offering," said Philip Zhang, vice president of Longcheer Holdings LTD. "To get these products to market quickly and cost effectively, Newport Media provided our team with one stop shopping for SOCs of multiple TV standards complete with all the necessary middleware software. We are looking forward to working with Newport Media in the future."
