People – Letterman Hopes CBS Lets Him Have Last Laugh
David Letterman wants to stick with CBS’ “Late Show” through his contract – and maybe longer – as rival Jay Leno prepares to surrender the “Tonight” reins next year.
“The way I feel now, I would like to go beyond 2010, not much beyond, but you know, enough to go beyond. You always like to be able to excuse yourself on your own terms,” Letterman said in an interview in Rolling Stone magazine.
“If the network is happy with that, great. If they wanna make a change in 2010, you know, I’m fine with that, too,” Letterman said.
Letterman, 61, along with Chris Rock and Tina Fey , is featured on the comedy-focused cover of the Rolling Stone issue out Friday.
Conan O’Brien will take over “Tonight” from Leno in June 2009, with Jimmy Fallon moving into O’Brien’s “Late Night” chair.

Surfers charged in beach fight
Two surfers have been charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly throwing a photographer into the water as he tried to shoot pictures of actor Matthew McConaughey surfing, prosecutors said this week .
Skylar Peak , 24, and Philip Hildebrand , 30, are accused of confronting several paparazzi who showed up in June on a Malibu beach to take pictures and film McConaughey.
McConaughey was not involved in the scuffle .
This week a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles district attorney’s office said prosecutors felt they had enough evidence to pursue the case.
Peak and Hildebrand will be arraigned in October.
Jamie Lynn sends Bristol a gift
Teenage mom Jamie Lynn Spears has sent a gift to Bristol Palin , the pregnant 17-year-old daughter of John McCain’s vice presidential pick Sarah Palin , a source close to the Beverly Hills baby store Petit Tresor told CelebTV.com.
Fox News is reporting that an insider told the Web site it was actually Lynne Spears , Jamie Lynn’s mother, who called about the gift, and requested the gift come from her daughter.
” They spent $60 on pink burp cloths,” the source said.
Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney Spears’ younger sister and the former star of the TV show “Zoey 101,” gave birth to her daughter, Maddie Briann , in June. She’s engaged to Casey Aldridge , a pipe-layer from Liberty, Miss.
Palin announced on Monday through the McCain campaign that her unmarried daughter is five-months pregnant. Bristol Palin is intending to marry the father of the baby, Levi Johnston .
